the republican, ron paul. i will vote for mitt romney because he talks like he has a head on strong. he will get the industrial back to work. how much is obama spending every year on an green global environment? how much money has he spent on the environment? everybody keeps calling me wanting me to go to college and stuff. how can i go to work -- there is no industrial work? >> thank you for the call. you mentioned ron paul -- of course it was congressman paul ryan debating tonight. >> i want to state that you said earlier that somebody on the page stated joe biden was a fool. he was an overly aggressive. i feel like obama should have been more aggressive with romney in the first debate. look, joe biden put it this administrative record on the record. paul ryan that could not back up what he was saying. >> ok. thank you for the call. john has this point. . >> and other men are two with your calls and comments and another chance to see the debate in its entirety. less is on the phone from kentucky. >> is essentially the format really did not serve either by then -- joe biden or paul ryan. i thou

failure, vice president biden. >> governor romney, talking about this again, talked about weakness and apologies from the obama administration. was that appropriate right in the middle of the crisis. >> this is a bunch of stuff. look here is the deal. >> what does that mean? a bunch of stuff? >> you have refused again to offer specifics on how you would pay that 20% across the board tax cut. do you have the specifics or are you still working on it, and that's why you won't tell voters. >> cenk: now michael i love that because i thought she was tough on both sides. her toughest question of the night was the first one about bengahzi to joe biden. who what was your sense of the moderator there? >> i felt she did a great job. if pulling from it they send too much time on foreign policy, i would like to see more on domestic policies. but counting interruptions. what about counting specifics. if you want to count the specifics that the vice president was able to come with versus the specifics and substance that ryan was able to come with, it's no contest. here we are sitting, talking abo

in these debates. the thing they're not talking about are mitt romney's taxes. the idea that they can look back and talk about taxes and ryan still getting caught with these lies and then the next day saying that's exactly what we meant to say. how does this work, errol. >> a promise has been made. a big broad promise has been made to splash taxes. it's estimated by a reasonable objective source that this could cost treasury 5 trillion-dollar over ten years. a lot of people are naturally curious. where are you going to get that 5 trillion-dollar, and it's not in this ticket's political best interest to answer this question. let's say they can do this. the mortgage deduction is going to have to go. there are a number of important tax loopholes, if you want to call them that, or tax incentives that will have to be ended. this is not something they're prepared to talk about. politically you have to understand that. they have 27 days left. it's not in anybody's best interest to say we're going to hawk at the most important entitlement that they've had for generations. they're trying to do somethin

the world more chaotic and us less safe. >> governor romney talked about the weakness -- talked about apologies from the obama administration. was that really appropriate right in the middle of the crisis? >> ryan: on that same bay the obama administration had the exact same position. they disavowed their own statement that put up earlier in the day in cairo. but it's never too early to speak up for our values. we should have spoken out right away when the green revolution was up and starting when iran people were being attacked. we should alwaysing stand up for peace, for demom aresy and individual rights. and not imposing these devastating defense cuts because what that does when we equivocate on our values -- it projects weakness, and when we look weak our adversaries are -- >> biden: that's all a bunch of ma lar i can. >> be specific. >> biden: the congressman here cut embassy security in his bert by $300 billion below what we asked for. number two governor romney before he even knew that our ambassador was killed he was making a political statement panne

and to gut medicare. joe biden simply dismantled the romney/ryan world view. but also talk about how the right wingers are trying to make a big deal out of joe biden's smile. so what? i would have been outright laughing in paul ryan's face. joe biden was fed up and who could blame him? >> with all due respect, that's a bunch of malarkey. >> and why is that so? >> because not a single thing he said is accurate. >> this is a bunch of stuff. >> what do you mean a bunch of stuff? >> it's simply inaccurate. >> it's irish. >> thanks for the translation. okay. >> malarkey. a bunch of stuff. i love it. i love it. biden systematically took apart ryan's arguments for less government, let's accountability, let's community. it got so bad, paul ryan was driven to drink. literally. he went back to that cup of water over and over again. by our last count, at least 21 time. what's the matter there, mr. ryan? got a little cotton mouth? last night the romney/ryan effort was exposed as a shield for the extreme far right and vice president biden drove that point home again and again today, campaigning r

, and when rom romney talks about repealing health care reform that's women's costs are going up, i'm not spending on my family, these issues are interconnected for women and that's been the president from president obama and joe biden in the way that romney and ryan are trying to get around talking about it. >> i think also ryan was going out of his way to appear sort of moderate and not is logically extreme and then was asked about the abortion question and really like, you know, kind of had a nonanswer almost because he doesn't believe in a woman's right to choose and -- >> he doesn't even agree with romney. when he said in a romney administration here's what position would be. that's not his position. he's actually more extreme than governor romney. >> he was the one sponsoring amendments with -- >> legitimate rape, which i like biden got that in there too. >> that's a separate ding. >> ben, the math thing has always been a trick of late, the arithmetic has been tricky for ryan, i'm referring to interviews with brit hume and chris wallace where he didn't have enough time to expl

romney pays in his federal income tax. >> even when biden wasn't on his campaign talking points he was using his very own special brand of biden-ooez to tug the rug out from under paul ryan's feet. >> this is a bunch of stuff. look here's the deal -- >> what does that mean. >> we irish call it mularkey. >> the greatest hope for republicans was a gaffe but biden managed to take his weakness and redirect it towards governor romney. >> romney is a good man, he cares about 100% of americans in this country. with respect to that quote, i think the vice president very well knows that sometimes the words don't come out of your mouth the right way. >> i always say what i mean. and so does romney. >> this morning both sides are claiming victory and, indeed, everything may change in the next five days when president obama and governor romney take the stage again. but what biden did give is the president -- gave the president a path throwing his detractors off the scent and leading his best friend on the path towards victory. franklin, as the new guy at the table, i ask you first, did vice pr

for more action going after romney/ryan on the 47%. >> these are the folks who talk about 47% of the american people being unwilling to take responsibility. it's about time governor romney takes some responsibility. >> biden had the crowd fired up after a debate performance many wish the president had given. one in which he outlined a blistering attack on his opponents, delivering a flurry of punches from the opening bell. >> romney said, no, let detroit go bankrupt. we moved in and helped people refinance their homes. governor romney said, no, let foreclosures hit the bottom. but it shouldn't be surprising for a guy who says 47% of the american people are unwilling to take responsibility for their own lives. my friend recently in a speech in washington said 30% of the american people are takers. these people are my mom and dad, the people i grew up with, my neighbors. they pay more effective tax than governor romney pays in his federal income tax. >> indeed. biden's performance was so impressive, the other party was forced to admit that they had taken a hiding. with even mit

health insurance and now can't get it, well, sir, that was your decision. that's romney talking. obama stuck his neck out and rescued it. mr. romney said, let it take bankruptcy. this is the big drastic differences between these candidates and these debates should debate them. >> howard fineman, a political analyst and editorial director of the huffington post. he's here and rounding out our panel in kentucky is the pulitzer prize columnist eugene robinson. thank you for being with us. i want to start with chuck. your reporting, does it tell you that it's going to be a broad debate about philosophy and differences or a congressional markup sessions where they argue over details? >> i think if it's up to paul ryan it's going to be details, a little markups and in the weeds. if it's up to biden, it's going to be more of a lively, ideological split. one of the goals they would hope that joe biden accomplishes tonight is to make you feel better, essentially, chris, is to make the base of the party feel better. show some fight. get in there in some issues that they know, create a divide in

the ryan plan, you will notice, laura. is he talking about the romney plan. is he talking about the romney tax plan. the romney budget. and making it very clear for the first time and i thought he did a great job of it, talking about who is the boss and the boss is governor romney. >> laura: all right, lou, great to see you. have a great weekend. >> you too. >> laura: when we come right back, martha raddatz questions the can cats on abortion. -- raddatz on abortion. we will hear from both sides coming up. >> laura: thanks for staying with us, i'm laura ingraham in for bill o'reilly. in the unresolved problem segment tonight, just when we thought the so-called war on women debate was over, last night's moderator martha raddatz might have reignited an issue with a question about abortion and faith. >> i don't see how a person can separate their public life from their private life or from their faith. our faith informs us in everything we do. my nate informs me about how to take care of the vulnerable about how to make sure that people have a chance in life. now, you weren't asked why i'm pro

the speech today. romney talked about the need for new leadership and bold leadership to bring a resolution to the israel/palestine situation. when the cameras were not rolling a few months ago when millions weren't listening or watching, romney had a different take on the exact same subject. i'd like to play that right now. >> these are problems that are very hard to solve. i look at the policy for political purposes committed to the destruction and elimination of israel, and he's throwing the issues. i say there's just to way. what you do is you move things along the best wake you can, you hope for a degree of stability but you recognize it's going to remain unsolved. >> so i'm sorry. it gets hard to take this stuff seriously at a certain point with when the guy gives a major foreign policy speech and bash obama for not bringing resolution to this program as president when he has gone in front of a group of people and basically said the best you could do as president is kick the can down the road. i have a hard time taking that seriously. >> unfortunately, he can't say that in the speech.

sentence, the vice president summed up the empty rhetoric of the romney campaign. >> stop talking about how you care about people. show me something. show me a policy. show me a policy where you take responsibility. >> many obama supporters were disappointed the president didn't hold mitt romney accountable for this 47% comments and his economic policies in general. vice president joe biden made up for it last night. he used 68 seconds to say exactly what needed to be said about the romney/ryan view of the middle class in this country. >> romney said, no, let detroit go bankrupt. we moved in and helped people refinance their homes. governor romney said, no, let foreclosures hit the bottom. but it shouldn't be surprising for a guy who says 47% of the american people are unwilling to take responsibility for their own lives. my friend recently in a speech in washington said 30% of the american people are takers. these people are my mom and dad, the people i grew up with. my neighbors. they pay more effective tax than governor romney pays in his federal income tax. they are elderly people who,

for him, bad for the workers. romney can try to distance himself all he wants. he can talk tough on the road about china and out on the campaign trail, but talk is cheap. and his refusal to act, his refusal to even listen to these sensata workers shows his complete and i mean utter disregard for the families being affected by this move. make no mistake, this is not just about freeport, illinois. this is about the future of american jobs and if mitt romney is elected president of the united states, put your seat belt on, there will be more of this. let's bring in the president of the united steelworkers, leo gerard. and i want to point right off the top tonight that this is a nonunion plant in freeport, illinois. mr. gerard, what do you make of this story? first of all, taking down the american flag, forcing workers to train their chinese replacements who make only 99 cents an hour. is this just the perfect story of the race to the bottom line and what it looks like in america? >> i think two things, ed. i think, first, it's exactly the way you characterize it. this is the real mi

they have simply failed to take personal responsibility for their lives. nice talk. listen to romney say out loud if you have a pre-existing medical condition and don't have insurance, well, that's your problem because that was your decision. that's how he talks. the same with the automobile industry. romney -- obama stuck his neck out to rescue it for all kinds of good reasons. his challenger said let it take bankruptcy. these are the drastic differences these debates should debate and they better do it. i'm joined by john heilemann, former rnc chair michael steele, my kind of republican. that will kill them. and politico's j. mar, jonathan mart martin. biden, first of all for the opposition, you're on defense, michael. >> always on defense. >> what does mr. ryan have to do to fend off the older, perhaps more seasoned veterans tonight? >> i think what he has to do is not get down in the weeds of the numbers but take those numbers and translate them into real people, real stories out there, very much as you saw romney do at the beginning of the delate last time. it really set the tone for wh

mitt romney who talked about 38.5 minutes. that wasn't necessarily an advantage for the president. because romney was widely considered to have won that debate. there was less of a gaffe during the vice presidential debate four years ago. joe biden spoke just under 40 minutes. sarah palin spoke for 40 minutes and 29 seconds. biden and palin stood at podiums. tonight, biden and ryan will be sitting together at a table and that will affect the way they interact, possibly also the amount of time they talk. jessica yellin is at the media center. jim acosta is in the spin room. jessica, set the scene for us. what's going on? >> hi, wolf. i'm actually in the media filing center. this is where the press from around the nation, actually from around the world. there are some people in from koer countries, have come to watch the debate and file their stories. you can see around here, here's our sister company, mark halperin and people from press from all over the place. fili and this is the gymnasium for centre college. usually, they play basketball and sports in here. but tonight, we're wa

want to talk to you about right in the middle of the crisis, governor romney and you are talking about this again tonight, talked about the weakness, talked about apology from the obama administration. was that really appropriate, right in the middle of the crisis? >> on that same day, the obama administration had the exact same position. let's recall that they disavowed their own statement that they put up earlier in the day in cairo. we had the same position. it's never too early to speak out for our values. we should have spoken out right away when the green revolution was up and starting when the mullahs in iran were attacking their people. we should not have called bashar assad a reformer when he was turning his russian-provided guns on his own people. we should always stand up for peace, for democracy, for individual rights. and we should not be imposing these devastating defense cuts because what that does, when we equivocate on our values, when we show -- >> am i going to get anything to say here? >> it projects weakness, when we look weak, our adversaries are able to attack us

are mischaracterizing the romney plan. saying you're right there is $5 trillion lowering the tax rates but he talks about cutting loopholes. but that is part of the plan. >> but he won't say, chris, which loopholes and which deductions. senator, i doubt seriously you would be if favor of doing away or cutting the home mortgage deduction for middle class americans. governor romney has not said what the plan is for paying for the $5 trillion in tax cuts just like he won't talk about what his tax returns have been or -- >> with all due reis spect, governor, first of all, governor romney made is clear in the debate and he was actually able to speak directly to the american people that he is not going to lower the burdening on up youer income individuals. we know that upper income individuals rely more heavily on deductions and he will give the relief on the middle class and it will be deficit neutral. one of the best lines of the debate was i have five sons and you can tell the story i'm used to hearing the story five times and having me believing it to be true but we know it is not true what they are

and then mitt romney in this primary campaign. we asked brett o'donnell to join us today to talk about this week's debate and how both candidates need to recalibrate for the next one. the big i think it is fare to coming out of this debate is what happened to president obama. why did he do so poorly. obviously you were in the room but best guess what do you think his debate team failed to do to prepare him for wednesday night? >> three areas where you have to prepare a candidate. the first s they have to know the issues and policy on both sides. i think president obama s fine in that area. but the last two areas i think his team may have failed. the second is you have to have a strategy going into the debate to execute. and the final thing is you have to be mentally prepared. i don't think the president was really mentally prepared to take on governor romney and i certainly think that he was in shock when governor romney went on offense and stayed on offense throughout the debate and put the president on his heels and the president's worst moments are when is on defense and that is where he spen

that romney for all of his good points, stumbled, too, during the debate. you say one case is when was talking about reforming social security and medicare, entitlements. let's take a look. >> if you are around 60 or older you don't need to listen any further but for younger people we need to talk about what changes are going to be occurring. >> chris: i was surprised by this. what did he do wrong there? >> i don't necessarily think -- you know, it is degrees of weakness and i think governor romney had a very strong night. section on sec hundred on entitlements he didn't necessarily look the best and seemed to be the moment where he wasn't as sure of himself on the arguments as he was on the rest of the debate. he was very strong on tax policy and economic policy and used that $90 billion figure to a great advantage twice. useused it against the presidet on energy policy and used it against them on education policy. but during the section on he entitlements he didn't necessarily seem to be at his strongest but still certainly much stronger than the president. >> chris: i want to ask you about

talked about this a lot. look at this. romney, ahead now in florida, north carolina, ohio and virginia. >> not ohio. >> ohio is down by one. >> he was so far behind. >> what we are seeing, in florida, which is a republican-leaning state if the race is tied, governor romney has a slight advantage. north carolina, he should win, as well. ohio is the key. all the swing states, including virginia, can go to governor romney but unless he wins ohio, he cannot win the election. ohio is now close to deadlocked. >>gregg: governor romney was down double digit. >> he was down in ohio, certainly. i don't know about double digits. notice news organization which spent all the money doing the state polls, we have not had one poll since the debate talking about the effect, favorability and other things. i will say this: one of the things that has happened, the race has the disconnect -- romney should you'd this, the $200 million or more spent making him into an eager and the president never made the charges. i would be out there torpedoing obama's add very advertising, why won't he say it himself? >>

at your point. it is kind of odd, if you -- if a person is talking directly to you, like governor romney was, during most of the debate, and, you don't look at them. it is almost -- it is -- could be considered rude or disinterested. irritated and it certainly sent the wrong message and at times, you notice the president is either looking to his left when the podium is canted to the right and, it sends the message, i want to get out of here as soon as possible. >> chris: you said romney through all of his good points stumbled, too and one was when he was talking about reforming social security and medicare, entitlement. let's look. >> 60, around 60 or older you don't need to listen any further but for younger people we need to talk about what changes will be occurring. >> chris: i was surprised by this. what did he do wrong there? >> well, i don't necessarily think -- you know, it is degrees of weakness and i think governor romney had a strong night but in this section, on entitlements, he didn't necessarily look the best, and, it seemed to be the moment where he wasn't as sure of himsel

in the middle of the crisis, governor romney, and you're talking about this again tonight, talked about the weakness, talked about apologies from the obama administration. was that appropriate right in the middle of the crisis? >> on that same day, the obama administration had the exact same position. let's recall, they disavowed their own statement they put out early in the day in cairo. it's never too early to speak out for our values. we should have spoken out right away when the green revolution was starting, when the mullas in iran were attacking their people. we should not have called assad a reformer when he was turning guns on his own people. we should always stand up for peace, democracy and individual rights and not be imposing these devastating defense cuts. because what that does, when we show -- when we look weak, our enemies are much more willing to test us. and our allies are -- >> with all due respect, that's a bunch of mularkey. >> why is that so? >> nothing he said is accurate. >> be specific. >> i will be very specific. number one, this lecture on embassy security. th

is veterans anit's something he and mitt romney haven't talked about this entire campaign. they accepted their party's nomination without talking about veterans or the war in afghanistan or the troops serving there. and you know, last year, on veterans day, governor romney got a group of veterans together and suggested that we voucherize, that is privatize, the v.a. now, that's not what you heard paul ryan talk about privatizing or voucherizing medicare or like he wanted to do when he was a younger congressman, privatize social security. so it's a consistent theme of voucherization or privitization of government functions. my father has a true idea of these programs, that they are the bedrock of the middle class but the idea you privatize the veterans administration as governor romney proposed just last year is remarkable and that's what i've been traveling the country to talk about. if you believe the math, romney's program would cut $11 billion to the v.a. in year one. that treats veterans from world war ii all the way to the two wars we have been fighting for a decade. this is a time

mitt romney is and was last night. i mean, if he was talking, he was speaking last night, he was lying. and look, mitt romney had a good night, but you know, even a, you know, blind squirrel gets a nut every now and then. >> are these dirty attacks, calling mitt romney a liar. is it a good idea for the democrats. we're back with our panel. brian some suggest this is classless to come and attack mitt romney for lying when the president didn't seen prepared and shell shocked and that's the response. he was so shell shocked that mitt romney was lying that he didn't know how to respond. >> and mitt romney's facts were tricky, we don't have time for that. let's include john sununu, romney's surrogate who said that obama is lazy, incompetent. has no idea what's going on. on both sides comments being made and let's not make this one-sided when you're talking about it. >> clayton: is that fair, tammy? >> americans and i think the tea party is a good example of this want to be told the truth. we have impressions of these guys and americans are going to make up their own mind and we know that p

amount of pressure on paul ryan to do exactly that. if you talk to people in the romney camp they believe the debate win by mitt romney last week was absolutely critical. this came after a month or so of just horrible press for romney gaffes on the campaign trail, unforced errors and this debate give them a silver lining and a path to get past those things. if paul ryan majorly flubs this debate tonight, that is not going to be a good thing for them. that could affect the polls in a way that the campaign does not want. >> bill: what do you of this attempt to soften mitt romney to the kinder gentler side? he tried that on abortion and then the house from the tea partiers and conservatives were so extreme that two days later he had to come back and say no no no i am pro-life. >> the romney campaign will tell you they don't believe he changed his position. paul ryan said he isn't disappointed from what he saw from his running mate and they have a unified position on this issue. whether you are changing your position or not. that's a problem that hits at the

of the crisis, governor romney -- and you're talking about this again tonight -- talked about the weakness, talked about apologies from the obama administration. was that really appropriate right in the middle of the crisis? ryan: on that same day, the obama administration had the exact same position. let's recall that they disavowed their own statement that they had put up earlier in the day in cairo. so we had the same position. it's never too early to speak out for our values. we should have spoken out right away when the green revolution was up and starting when the mullahs in iran were attacking their people. we should not have called bashar assad a reformer when he was turning his russian-provided guns on his own people. we should always stand up for peace, for democracy, for individual rights. and we should not be imposing these devastating defense cuts because what that does when we equivocate on our values, it makes us more weak. it projects weakness, and when we look weak, our adversaries are much more willing to test us, and our allies -- biden: with all due respect, that's a bu

. patti ann: talk about that so-called debate bounce that romney got. looking back historically, when a candidate is perceived to have won a debate, how long does that bounce last? >> there has not really been any record of an event like the debate we had last wednesday night. four years ago there was absolutely no debate bounce. eight years ago very modest because we haven't seen a challenger win so decisively. we do know most bounces in and of themselves last less than a week in today's 24, 7 news environment. patti ann: we'll see what happens after the upcoming vice-presidential debate and beyond. >> it will be interesting. patti ann: yeah, that's for sure. thank you as always for joining us with the very latest numberss. bill: he was telling us last week to wait until monday morn. very interesting how that develops. >>> the break in a case of a missing 10-year-old girl. jessica ridgeway is her name. police say jessica was last seen on friday morning walking to school and then she vanished. police extended their search into the town of superior, colorado. that is a bit north of den

're talking about. what is interesting, you never hear romney say, no new taxes. you do not hear him say that. >> colby? >> fact. he proposes a 20% across-the- board tax cut. >> marginal tax rate. >> alternative minimum tax. he proposes tax deductions in reducing the federal deficit by 2015. what that means is, over time, the analysis shows, $5 billion over the next decade. >> i am sorry, read my lips, we are running short on time. the joe and paul the day. >> this is deadly earnest. how they can justify, how they can justify raising taxes on the middle-class, who have been very the last four years. how come in lord's name, can they justify raising their taxes? >> vice-president biden just today said that the middle- class, over the last four years has been "buried." we agree. that means we need to stop digging, by electing a run in next president of the united states. >> what do you think, jonathan? >> you talk to a lot of folks in the romney campaign and is a joe biden is the gift that keeps on giving. you saw him pause when he said four years. i think he meant to say 10 years or something.

where mitt romney stands on the issues. he talked about not taxing the wealthy. now he says he will tax the wealthy. he talks about energy independence now but didn't support the president on his programs to create alternative forms of energy for our country, which this president did. he talks about tax changes to help business development. who did that? president obama, with 100% tax credit in manufacturing, for example, which has just sizzled across the industrial midwest with the business start-ups that we see. even art furnaces being installed on the ohio republic steel. we haven't seen this in two decades. so, he can talk as a candidate, but the president has done it in a very difficult situation that he inherited from the bush administration, where the whole country's economy collapsed because of those titans up on wall street that tied up the finances of this country, and literally, we've had the largest transfer of wealth in american history from main street to wall street. you think that mitt romney, who was a part of that culture, is going to change anything for the people of
